Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccination is introduced. At the times, smallpox was one of the greatest killers, particularly amongst the young. He even coined the word vaccine from the Latin ‘vacca’ for cow as his experiments were based on the theory that milkmaids who suffered the mild disease of cowpox, never contracted smallpox.
